A British couple, Peter and Barbie, who were held captive by the Taliban in Afghanistan, have shared their harrowing experience of returning to the UK. They described a profound culture shock, highlighting the stark contrast between their previous life in Afghanistan and the freedom they now enjoy in the UK. Barbie, who wore a hijab and was restricted from going out without her husband in Afghanistan, expressed astonishment at the liberties people have in the UK. The couple was arrested in February 2025 after a flight from Kabul to Bamiyan province and was later released through Qatari mediation. They were held in various prisons, including the notorious Pul-e-Charkhi, and endured harsh conditions, with Barbie describing malnourishment and anemia during her time in captivity. Despite the challenges, Peter and Barbie expressed forgiveness and a desire to work with the Afghan government for the country's benefit. They also sent a message of hope to another British couple, Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who are currently detained in Iran.
