The Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) has just unveiled a new, more demanding certification for mechanical watches, aptly named 'Excellence Chronometer'. This new standard aims to elevate the already precise COSC chronometers to an even higher level of accuracy and performance. While many might not notice the difference, watch enthusiasts will surely appreciate the enhanced regulation.
COSC's current chronometers are renowned for their daily rate tolerance of +6/-4 seconds per day. However, the new 'Excellence Chronometer' standard tightens this tolerance to just 6 seconds per day. But that's not all; it also demands increased magnetic resistance of at least 200 Gauss and independently verified power reserve durations. These watches will continue to undergo the rigorous 15-day testing under ISO 3159, but the cased movements must now meet these higher standards.
