CWRU's Historic Adelbert Gym Undergoes Major Renovation (2026)

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is gearing up for a transformative renovation of one of its most historic buildings, with plans to invest nearly $20 million in the project. This ambitious undertaking marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first expansion of the Adelbert Gym in over a century. The gym, a cornerstone of the university's history, first opened its doors in 1888, and now, with the support of generous philanthropic gifts, it is set to be revitalized and expanded.

The renovation, set to commence this month, will breathe new life into the historic gym. The project, valued at $19.4 million, will include a range of enhancements to better serve the university community. The expansion will add 6,500 square feet to the existing 29,000-square-foot building, creating a modern and versatile space. The DiSanto Arena, named after the generous DiSanto family, will feature new locker rooms for basketball teams, a social space called the 'Spartan Gallery,' and an expanded lobby and entry tower.

The renovation will also address accessibility, adding an elevator and accessible public restrooms to ensure full accessibility to all levels. The basketball court, now known as the Brennan Industries Court, will have a seating capacity of 1,400, an increase of 200 spectators. This expansion will not only enhance the student experience but also elevate the university's athletic facilities to premier NCAA Division III standards.

The project is a testament to the power of philanthropy. The DiSanto family, prominent donors to CWRU, has committed a substantial $900,000 in addition to their earlier $5 million pledge. Brennan Industries, a Solon-based manufacturer, has also stepped forward with a $2 million commitment. David Carr, a member of the CWRU board of trustees and the chairman and CEO of Brennan Industries, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on the university and the region.

This renovation is not just about physical transformation; it's about preserving history and creating a space that will serve the university for generations to come. The Adelbert Gym, originally constructed as a World War I armory, has a rich past. The last expansion, in 1918, was intended for military use, but the war's end led to a change of plans. The space was eventually integrated into the gym, and now, with the renovation, it will once again be a hub for student activities and community programming.

As the renovation progresses, CWRU looks forward to welcoming students and the community to the modernized DiSanto Arena, a space that will become a cornerstone of campus life and a premier athletic facility in the country.
