Nkosinathi Sangweni's remarkable journey from a rural KZN village to the forefront of European particle physics research
Nkosinathi Thobani Sangweni's path from the tranquil Ntendeka village in KwaZulu-Natal to the cutting-edge laboratories of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva is a testament to the power of possibility. At just 23 years old, Sangweni has already bridged the gap between rural classrooms and the global stage of particle physics, contributing to the exploration of the universe's deepest mysteries.
His academic achievements are impressive: he graduated from the University of Cape Town with a first-class BSc in physics and astrophysics in 2022 and completed his honours in physics in 2023. He is currently pursuing an MSc in physics at the same university.
One of Sangweni's notable career milestones was his selection for the CERN programme, where he collaborated with scientists worldwide from June to August 2024. During his time at CERN, he developed a computer program using artificial intelligence (AI) to assist scientists in categorizing muons, a type of subatomic particle.
Sangweni's upbringing was shaped by his grandparents, who raised him while his parents sought work in urban areas. He credits his grandfather's ingenuity for inspiring him, as he witnessed his grandfather's resourcefulness in engineering water from a communal tap and creating a system to ensure a steady water supply at home.
His passion for science and physics was ignited during his high school years, thanks to a dedicated teacher who instilled a love for physical science. This teacher's enthusiasm and willingness to provide science magazines for extra reading significantly influenced Sangweni's career path.
The night sky over Ulundi, where he grew up, also played a role in his interest in astrophysics. He recalls wondering about the differences between shooting stars and actual stars, which further fueled his curiosity and led him to pursue astrophysics at the University of Cape Town.
Sangweni's MSc research focuses on the ATLAS Experiment at CERN, a general-purpose particle detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This experiment aims to study high-energy particle collisions to uncover the fundamental building blocks of matter and the forces that govern them. His work contributes to a deeper understanding of rare Standard Model processes observed in ATLAS.
For his honours research, Sangweni explored the potential of new physics to enhance our understanding of the universe's fundamental structure. His next goal is to pursue a DPhil in particle physics at Oxford University, a three- to four-year program.
At Oxford, Sangweni aims to continue his research on finding new physics by exploring lower energies and extrapolating the implications for higher energies that current technology cannot observe. His tutoring experience in high school, where he shared his passion for science and realized his natural teaching abilities, has also shaped his approach to education.
Sangweni believes that sharing information and sparking curiosity are essential aspects of effective teaching. He finds joy in his work and attributes his success at the University of Cape Town to his love for learning and the support of his supervisor, collaborators, and friends.
Looking ahead, Sangweni envisions himself making quality education more accessible in the next decade, especially in communities like his own. He aspires to inspire the next generation of scientists and pursue a niche direction in astroparticle physics, pushing the boundaries of high-energy physics research.
