So, where is this mysterious ultraviolet radiation coming from? One theory suggests it's from processes happening around the protostars themselves, perhaps from shocks as material falls onto them. Or maybe it's from the tantrum-like jets erupting from these infant stars.

Another idea is that the radiation is being cast by nearby massive stars, shining their light on the protostars. However, the team's research, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, suggests otherwise. By considering the properties of surrounding stars and the dust around the protostars, they ruled out external sources.

"We can say with certainty that UV radiation is present in the vicinity of the protostar, affecting the observed molecular lines," Karska concludes. "Its origin has to be internal."

The researchers will continue their investigation, delving deeper into the gas, dust, and ice of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud. The goal? To unravel the mystery of this unexplained ultraviolet radiation.
