Get ready for a Christmas Eve miracle! The Powerball jackpot is soaring to a staggering $1.7 billion for the upcoming drawing, making it the fourth-largest jackpot in U.S. history. But is this a sign of good fortune for someone out there? Let's take a closer look at the numbers and the odds, and explore the possibility of a Christmas Eve miracle.
The Powerball jackpot has been growing steadily, and with no winner emerging on Monday night, it's now at an astonishing $1.7 billion. This is the fourth-highest jackpot in Powerball history, and the longest run of drawings without a winner, according to the lottery.
"Much like the holidays, Powerball is a game that brings people together to dream big and hope for a brighter future," said Matt Strawn, Powerball official and Iowa Lottery CEO. "We hope this growing jackpot inspires excitement and joy, and, most importantly, good will to all."
The jackpot has an estimated cash value of $781.3 million, and the odds of winning are 1 in 292.2 million. While the odds are stacked against you, there have been some notable exceptions. The Powerball jackpot has only been won on Christmas Eve once, in 2011, and it's been claimed four times on Christmas Day, in 1996, 2002, 2010, and 2013.
Monday night's drawing produced nine $1 million prize winners, 28 $100,000 prize winners, and 107 $50,000 prize winners. Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and they cost $2 each. So, if you're feeling lucky, head to your nearest lottery retailer and give it a shot!
The drawing will take place at 10:59 p.m. ET from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee, and it will also be livestreamed on Powerball's website. Will you be watching? And what do you think the odds are of a Christmas Eve miracle? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
