Robbie Williams: A New Chart-Topping King?
In a stunning turn of events, Robbie Williams has shattered a record previously held by the iconic Beatles, claiming his 16th UK No. 1 album and securing his place as the all-time chart record holder. But here's where it gets controversial...
Williams' latest album, Britpop, a tribute to the vibrant guitar music of the 90s, soared to the top spot in its debut week. All but one of his studio albums have graced the pinnacle, with only Reality Killed the Video Star, released in 2009, missing out due to the dominance of boy band JLS. Additionally, three greatest hits compilations and the soundtrack to the biopic Better Man have contributed to his impressive tally.
It's evident that Williams had his sights set on this record. He strategically moved the release date of Britpop, originally scheduled for October, to avoid competing with Taylor Swift's highly anticipated album. By releasing Britpop in the relatively quiet week of January 16th, he ensured its success.
Williams himself described Britpop as a personal project, saying, "It's the album I've always wanted to write and release since leaving Take That in 1995." The Guardian's pop critic, Alexis Petridis, praised the album, highlighting its melodies and enjoyable nature.
The Beatles, with their greatest hits album 1, held the previous record, but Williams has achieved this feat in a shorter timeframe. It took the Beatles 37 years to reach their 15 No. 1 albums, while Williams accomplished it in just 29 years.
As for other music giants, The Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift trail with 14 No. 1 albums each, followed by Elvis Presley with 13. Bruce Springsteen and Madonna round out the top with 12 each.
While Presley holds the record for UK No. 1 singles with 21, Williams has seven to his name, with his most recent being Candy in 2012.
In the singles chart, British rapper Dave claimed his fourth No. 1 with Raindance, a collaboration with Tems.
So, is Robbie Williams truly the 'greater' artist, surpassing even the legendary Beatles? What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below! We'd love to hear your take on this chart-topping controversy.
