Feeling the sting of defeat? It's a sentiment echoing through the Vancouver Canucks' locker room right now, as they find themselves at the bottom of the NHL standings. The losing streak has clearly taken its toll, and one player, in particular, is voicing his frustrations.
“To be honest, I think this whole home stand is frustrating,” shared Boeser, a sentiment many fans are likely feeling as well.
When asked about the team's efforts, Boeser acknowledged the push, but the losses continue to pile up. “At the end of the day, we lost another game, and it’s getting really frustrating.”
Adding to the challenges, Boeser was dealing with discomfort, even consulting with team doctors about a potential appendix issue. Despite the pain, he suited up for the game.
In that game, Boeser played over 20 minutes, managing only one shot on goal and a minus-one rating. He explained, “That’s part of the condensed schedule. You’re gonna have nicks and bumps and bruises and whatever. But, yeah, I pushed through it and I wish I could have done more to help our team win the hockey game.”
Drafted in the first round (23rd overall) of the highly regarded 2015 NHL draft, Boeser has experienced his share of losing seasons with the Canucks. He's only seen playoff hockey in two of his eight seasons with the team. Now, with the Canucks languishing in 32nd place in the league standings, a significant gap behind the teams ranked 30th and 31st, Boeser admits this feels different.
“I think this is different. I don’t know if this feeling has been a little different than in the past. I feel like there’s games we’re playing pretty well and out-chancing teams and stuff, and we’re on the wrong side of things. I think it just comes down to doing the little things right. I think you always have to go back on that, and we have to be harder to play against, and the little details of the hockey game, you have to make sure you’re dialled in at all times. And I think there’s times where we get away from those details, and the puck ends up in our net. And I think that’s definitely a big issue.”
During their recent four-game homestand, the Canucks outshot their opponents, including the Utah Mammoth (33-18), Detroit Red Wings (39-21), and the Sabres (32-15). However, they were outscored 11-3 in those games. They did manage a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild, despite being outshot 30-21.
The players' effort can't be questioned; they are trying. Whether it's due to injuries or roster issues, the Canucks just aren't converting their opportunities. The frustration is palpable, as Boeser's comments after Thursday's loss clearly indicate.
But here's where it gets controversial... Is the team's current situation solely due to on-ice performance, or are there deeper issues at play?
